Home Insulation Grants

Home insulation grants in the UK are a fantastic way for homeowners to make their homes more energy-efficient, cut down on heating bills, and do their part for the environment. With energy costs on the rise and climate change becoming an ever-growing concern, these grants have never been more important.

The UK government and energy companies are offering several funding schemes, like the Great British Insulation Scheme and the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4), to help households upgrade their insulation. These programs are especially helpful for low-income families and those living in homes that aren’t very energy-efficient.

By taking advantage of these grants, you can enjoy a warmer home, save money on your energy bills, and reduce your carbon footprint , all while supporting the UK’s efforts to become more sustainable.

Different Funding Schemes Available for Home Insulation

The UK government and energy companies offer several funding schemes to help homeowners and tenants improve their property’s insulation:

Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)

The GBIS is designed to provide a single insulation upgrade per household, targeting homes with an EPC rating of D or lower. With a budget of £1 billion, it aims to retrofit 300,000 homes by March 2026. Eligible properties include those in Council Tax bands A-D in England or A-E in Scotland and Wales. The scheme covers measures like loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

Energy Company Obligation (ECO4)

ECO4 takes a whole-house approach, offering multiple upgrades such as loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation, and heating system repairs. It focuses on low-income households and vulnerable groups receiving specific benefits. ECO4 is open until March 2026 and ensures comprehensive energy-saving improvements.

Warm Homes Local Grant

Starting from April 1, 2025, this scheme provides funding for local authorities to deliver energy performance upgrades for low-income households living in privately owned homes. With £500 million allocated across 270 local authorities over three years, it aims to streamline access to funding.

Why More Homes Are Opting for Insulation

Insulation offers numerous benefits that make it a popular choice among homeowners:

  • Lower Energy Bills: Proper insulation can reduce heating costs by up to £620 annually.

  • Environmental Impact: Insulated homes emit less CO2, saving approximately 1.7 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

  • Improved Comfort: Insulation helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures and eliminates draughts.

  • Enhanced Soundproofing: It reduces external noise, creating a quieter living environment.

  • Healthier Homes: By preventing dampness and mould, insulation improves indoor air quality and reduces health risks.

  • Increased Property Value: Energy-efficient homes with high EPC ratings are more attractive to buyers and renters.

Types of Insulation Grants Available

Cavity Wall Insulation Grants

Cavity wall insulation fills the gaps between walls with insulating material, reducing heat loss significantly. Grants under GBIS and ECO4 can cover installation costs entirely for eligible households. This measure can save up to £405 annually on energy bills.

Loft Insulation Grants

Loft insulation prevents up to 25% of heat from escaping through the roof. It is one of the most cost-effective measures available through GBIS and ECO4 schemes. Eligible households can receive full coverage for installation costs.

Internal Wall Insulation Grants

Internal wall insulation involves adding insulating material inside solid walls. This option is ideal for older properties with uninsulated walls.

External Wall Insulation Grants

External wall insulation involves wrapping the exterior of solid walls with insulating material. It is particularly effective for homes where internal options are not feasible.

Room-in-Roof Insulation Grants

Converted loft spaces or attics used as living areas can benefit from room-in-roof insulation grants. These measures help maintain comfortable temperatures in these often poorly insulated spaces.

Can I Really Get a Free Insulation Grant?

Yes! Many UK households qualify for free insulation grants under schemes like ECO4 or GBIS. Eligibility typically depends on factors such as:

  • Receiving qualifying benefits (e.g., Universal Credit, Pension Credit)

  • Annual household income below £31,000

  • EPC rating of D-G

  • Council Tax bands A-D in England or A-E in Scotland/Wales

Even if you don’t meet these criteria, partial funding may still be available for certain measures like external wall insulation.

What if you don't qualify?

If you don't qualify for free insulation grants, you can still improve your home's energy efficiency. Here are the typical costs for common insulation measures:

Loft Insulation: £654 to £1,206

Cavity Wall Insulation: £950 to £4,600

Room-in-Roof Insulation: £1,500 to £2,700

These investments can lead to significant long-term energy savings, making them worthwhile even without a grant.

How Can FreeInsulation Help?

FreeInsulation have a network of approved Installers who all have access to ECO Insulation Grant funding. Providing you qualify, we will allocate you to one of these Installers who will carry out a free, no-obligation survey.

If your property is suitable for Home Insulation and you qualify for a Grant, our Installer will carry out the work should you be happy to go ahead. They will then claim the grant from an Energy Supplier or one of their agents.
